Se trata de una serie de veinte patrulleros lanzamisiles antibuque que se construyeron como una modificación de la clase francesa “La Combattante IIa”. Reemplazaron la los buques de la clase “Jaguar”. Su uso táctico consistía en el confinamiento de la flota Soviética en el Báltico en caso de conflicto, negandoles la posibilidad de acceder al Mar del Norte y al Canal de la Mancha. Por su pequeño tamaño, gran velocidad y potente armamento eran unidades idoneas para ese cometido.
